I had been interested in photography for a long time - I have gigabytes of accumulated photos going back for years. I increased the quality of the equipment I used from an ancient 1MP point and shoot, to various smart phones... nothing seemed to represent my experiences. Late in 2015, after I finally paid off a student loan that had been plaguing me like a stuck shutter, I finally saved up enough to buy a real camera. It took a few days to reach way back in my memories, to my days working with lasers in a physics lab, to recall all the optics classes I took in my youth. After that, it was all downhill.
While I experimented with my camera for months, I didn't show my photography to any of my friends/family until 2016. I took my nephews to Yosemite for their Christmas present, and the timing was perfect to go to the perfect winter wonderland. The clouds were low and threatening, the mist mysterious over the trees. The shots I took there were finally exciting enough for me to start showing my photos to friends and family.
Over the following months, I slowly came up with Capta Lucem, mostly at the urging of my friends and family, who insisted that others would enjoy my art (as an engineer, that was shocking to hear). I think the digital medium is convenient, but I mostly enjoy my work in print form, either on canvas or aluminum. I've experimented with putting prints on other medium... foam board, coasters, random chunks of wood... and will continue to do so; but for now, any prints I sell or give away (I've done a little charity work) will be in more typical print form.
I hope you enjoy what I display over the coming years, I'm certainly excited to see what comes of this.
Cheers!
James
